Forex VPS for MT4 and MT5: setup, latency and specs

A forex VPS is a remote Windows server that runs your MetaTrader 4 or 5 terminal around the clock, close to your broker's trade server. Your expert advisors keep trading while your computer is off, and orders travel a shorter path. The location decides most of the benefit: choose the one closest to your broker's trade server.

This guide uses our Windows RDP servers as the example: Windows Server 2019, 2022 or 2025, or Windows 10 or 11, with full administrator access on every plan except the shared seat, ready about five minutes after you order. The steps apply to any Windows server.

Why run MetaTrader on a server

An expert advisor trades only while its terminal runs and stays connected. A home computer sleeps, restarts for updates, and loses power or internet at the worst moment; each gap is a period in which open positions go unmanaged. A VPS for MetaTrader avoids most of that: our SLA covers 99.9% monthly network availability, and you can reach the terminal over Remote Desktop from a computer or a phone.

You do not need one if you trade by hand and only while you sit at your own computer. You do if an expert advisor, a trade copier or a signal subscription must keep running when you are away.

MetaQuotes virtual hosting vs your own Windows server

MetaQuotes sells virtual hosting from inside the terminal, paid from an MQL5.community account. When you register, the system automatically selects the server closest to your broker and compares its latency with yours. You prepare charts and expert advisors in your local terminal and migrate them. The move is one way: MetaQuotes calls synchronization "a one-direction process", so every local change needs a new migration. You then manage the hosted copy from your local terminal, where you can read its journals, see CPU and memory graphs, and stop it.

The limits are the reason many traders run their own server. On the virtual platform, MetaQuotes' help for MT5 and for MT4 says that:

• "DLL calls are completely forbidden", and in MT4 a program that calls a DLL is stopped with a critical error;
• scripts are not migrated, even if they run in an endless loop;
• charts with non-standard timeframes and symbols are not transferred;
• MT5 accounts with one-time password authentication cannot be used;
• programs that use WebRequest need every trusted URL listed before migration.

The rule of thumb: if your expert advisors are pure MQL and you trade one account, the built-in hosting is the simplest option. If you use DLL-based tools, several terminals or anything outside MetaTrader, run your own Windows server.

Forex VPS latency: how close to your broker

Latency is the round trip between your terminal and the broker's trade server, a delay every order pays before the broker sees it. It matters most for strategies that trade often on small moves. Your own connection to the VPS only affects how fast the remote screen responds; orders leave from the VPS.

Brokers run their trade servers in specific data centers and name the location in their documentation or on request. Choose the location closest to that server. These are estimates from our latency model, not measurements: great-circle distance, light in fiber at about 200 km per millisecond, a 1.45 factor for real routes and 2 ms for equipment.

Amsterdam is about 360 km from both London and Frankfurt, Zürich about 300 km from Frankfurt, and Kuala Lumpur about 310 km from Singapore. Every one of our locations is at least 63 ms from New York, so if your broker's trade server is there, a server near New York will serve you better than any of ours. To measure the real latency, try the location with a new plan: a new RDP service has a 72-hour money-back window on its first period, refunded to your balance.

Forex VPS specs: how much server you need

MetaQuotes publishes no fixed hardware requirements: its installation guide says they "depend on specific platform use conditions", such as the MQL5 programs running and the number of charts and instruments. Windows itself takes a good part of 2 GB. The terminal counts below are rough guidance, not measurements:

A terminal with a few charts and one simple expert advisor needs far less than one with dozens of charts, deep history and heavy indicators. Watch memory in Task Manager for a few days, and move up a plan if it stays above about 80%. Run backtests and optimizations on your own computer rather than on the server that trades. Every plan has a 1 Gbps port, and billing is monthly, quarterly (5% off) or yearly (12% off). Cryptocurrency mining is not allowed on RDP plans under our acceptable use policy.

Windows Server or Windows 11?

MetaQuotes says MetaTrader 5 "can run under Microsoft Windows 10/11". Windows Server 2019, 2022 and 2025 share their code base with those releases and run the terminals too. Windows Server 2022 is the balanced choice: supported until October 14, 2031, light enough for RDP Solo, and free of the yearly feature updates of Windows 11. Windows 11 needs at least 4 GB of RAM, and Windows 10 reached the end of support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 and 11 also allow one interactive session at a time, where Windows Server allows two administrative sessions.

Our comparison of Windows versions for RDP has the details. On Windows Server, run sconfig and set updates to download only, then install them while markets are closed, so a restart never lands in the middle of a trading session.

Install MetaTrader and start it automatically after a reboot

1. Install the terminal from your broker. For several accounts, install one copy per account, each in its own folder: MetaQuotes' help says two copies of the platform "cannot run from the same directory".
2. Log in with Save password ticked. Then, in MetaQuotes' words, "the next time you start the platform, the last used account will be automatically connected to the server".
3. Keep automated trading allowed on the Expert Advisors tab of the platform settings. When it is off, "scripts and Expert Advisors can work, but are not able to trade".
4. Add the terminal to the Startup folder. Press Win+R and run shell:startup; Microsoft describes this folder as the applications that start when a user signs in. Put a shortcut to terminal64.exe there, or to terminal.exe for MT4, one per installed copy.
5. Sign in automatically after a reboot. The Startup folder only runs once someone signs in. Microsoft's Autologon tool makes Windows "log on the user at the console" at each start. It stores the password in the registry as an LSA secret, which "a user with administrative rights can easily retrieve and decrypt", so use a strong password that you use nowhere else.
6. Test it. Restart the server from its page in the client area, reconnect, and check that each terminal is running and connected.

Task Scheduler works too, together with Autologon: create a task with the At log on trigger and Run only when user is logged on. Microsoft documents that such a task "will be run only in an existing interactive session", which is where MetaTrader's window can appear. When you finish working, close the Remote Desktop window instead of signing out: closing it disconnects the session and leaves the terminals running, while signing out closes them.

Secure the remote desktop

A Remote Desktop port open to the internet receives automated password guesses around the clock, and a trading server is worth guarding. Five measures close most of the risk:

• Network Level Authentication makes clients prove the password before Windows shows a login screen. It is on by default on current versions; check that it stays ticked.
• A strong password of at least 16 random characters, used nowhere else, and a new name for the built-in Administrator account.
• An account lockout policy, for example 15 minutes after 5 wrong passwords.
• A different RDP port, which cuts log noise but does not hide the service from a thorough scan.
• An allowlist that accepts Remote Desktop only from your own IP address, the most effective of the five.
