Updated 26 September 2026 4 min read In this guide - Windows Server 2022 is the balanced default: supported until October 2031 and light enough for a 2 GB plan. - Windows Server 2025 adds a Windows 11 style desktop, winget and OpenSSH, is supported until November 2034 and needs about 4 GB of RAM. - Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025, and Windows 11 needs at least 4 GB of RAM. - The shared seat is a private Windows account on a shared server, without administrator rights. Windows RDP4 sections On every [Windows RDP](https://offshoreserv.com/offshore-rdp) plan except the shared seat, you choose Windows Server 2019, 2022 or 2025, or Windows 10 or 11, and get full administrator access. After mainstream support ends, Microsoft ships security fixes only, which is fine for a server. After extended support ends, there are no fixes at all. Windows 10 LTSC editions follow their own, longer schedules; to see which edition and version you have, run: ``` winver ``` ## RAM footprint Microsoft's minimums are what setup needs, not what feels responsive. A desktop session with Microsoft Defender, Windows Update and one browser uses a good part of 2 GB on its own. As a rule of thumb: - Server 2019 and 2022 run light, single-purpose workloads, such as one trading terminal or a script, on RDP Solo (2 GB). - Server 2025, Windows 10 and Windows 11 need RDP Duo (4 GB) or more. Microsoft's minimum for Windows 11 is 4 GB. - Several terminals, browsers with many tabs or several browser profiles call for RDP Quad (8 GB) or larger. Watch memory in Task Manager for a few days. If it stays above about 80%, move to a larger plan. ## Which version to choose ### Trading platforms (MT4 and MT5) MetaQuotes lists Windows 10 and 11 as the supported systems for MetaTrader 5. Windows Server 2019, 2022 and 2025 share their code base with those releases (builds 17763, 20348 and 26100), and the terminals run on them too. Windows Server 2022 is the balanced choice: supported until 2031, light on memory, and free of the yearly feature updates of Windows 11. Choose Server 2025 if you want the newest release and have 4 GB or more. To keep Windows Update from restarting the server during market hours, open the server configuration tool and set updates to download only, then install them while markets are closed: ``` sconfig ``` ### Automation and bots Choose Server 2022 or 2025. Server 2025 includes winget for scripted software installs and an OpenSSH server you can switch on in Server Manager, which makes it easy to manage from scripts. For jobs that must keep running after you disconnect, use Task Scheduler with **Run whether user is logged on or not**. Tools that click on screen elements stop working while your Remote Desktop window is minimized, because the client tells the server to stop drawing the session. On the Windows PC you connect from, run this once to keep it drawing: ``` reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client" /v RemoteDesktop_SuppressWhenMinimized /t REG_DWORD /d 2 /f ``` ### Browsers Server 2022 and 2025 include Microsoft Edge. Microsoft ships Server 2019 with Internet Explorer 11, whose Enhanced Security Configuration blocks most downloads. If your server has no other browser, turn that configuration off for administrators in Server Manager, under Local Server, then install the browser you want. On Server 2025 you can install one with winget: ``` winget install --id Mozilla.Firefox -e ``` Browsers are the heaviest thing most people run over RDP: a busy tab or browser profile can use several hundred megabytes. ### When Windows 10 or 11 makes sense Some consumer software refuses to install on Server editions. For that, choose Windows 11, since Windows 10 no longer receives regular security updates.
